Foreign language peace of mind: a positive emotion drawn from the Chinese EFL learning context

Abstract This study presents a new positive emotion construct, ?????? ( waiyu pinghe xintai ) or Foreign Language Peace of Mind (FLPOM), drawn from the Chinese cultural tradition. It is low-arousal (LAP) emotional state (e.g., calmness, peacefulness) and internal harmony. Three sub-studies were conducted. In Study 1, measurement scale FLPOM was developed validated. 2, administered to English as learners along Enjoyment (FLE) which can potentially reflect slightly more high-arousal (HAP) states joy, enthusiasm) test discriminability FLE. 3 examined extents FLE predict learners’ language proficiency. Correlation discriminant validity analysis confirmed that related but discriminable constructs. Stepwise regression analyses revealed stronger predictor self-perceived FL proficiency than Possible implications on teaching learning in context provided.
